Movie: "The Shining" (1980)

Ranked at Top. #250 over at IMDb. A friend once said that he considered 'A Clockwork Orange' as being fairly overrated, probably 'cuz of the Kubrick direction. Well, I must say I disagree on that one. This(!) is probably one of Kubrick's most overrated films. I must have seen it as a child, remember a few scenes, but it was years ago.

So..
Jack Torrance's (played by Jack Nicholson) new job is to attend the Overlook hotel over the five months that it's closed due to winter climate. No biggie, right? Besides, Jack's side profession is to write, so he could use this isolation for inspiration. Of course, his wife and son shall also come to stay. Warm and cosy, five months of winter, just the three of them, all by themselves. Nice, right? Nah, Jack is going to freak out way before deadline. The hotel has a little sad story over itself, but I don't think this is the case here. In fact, I'm not pretty sure what's the case here. It could be that Jack is one of those sober alcoholics, who finally cannot avoid a relapse. Bang, shit hits the fan. Is that it? Not sure.

However, the impression of panic which Shelley Duvall gives when Jack goes nuts is not very remarkable. However, enough said about the acting. The one scene/dialog that caught my interest was the one between Jack and Lloyd, the bartender. Lloyd has this really creepy attitude which I liked. Unsure of whether it had been wrecked if they would have played it further.

The sum of all this? Guess this is one of these films you need to have seen. So, now I have, probably not for the first time. The real pro with this flick was that the 2h20m didn't feel like straits. Nah, almost like it felt that I'd only been watching for like 1 hour and 30 minutes when the end credits started to roll. So. End of story.
