Movie: "Lost in Space" (1998)

Wow! I can't believe how I've missed out on this film. I mean, it's been around for ten years. I remember when I was around seven years old, they aired the television show from the 60's daily over the cable network. We had just gotten ourselves cable so all these shows where new to me, and I found them very exciting. If I look at myself then, I would be almost sure that I would end up as one of these Trekkies. Anyways, it's fun, back then I did not see any "tech diff" between Star Trek and Lost in Space, even though the Trek episodes they showed back then were probably at least from the 80's.

Well, now I've also seen the film. It wasn't bad at all, actually one of the better Sci/Fi films I've seen over the last couple of years. It was more of a space adventure, with some more serious intigues, than just blam boom blow (like in Sunshine, for example). Also, I guess when I was a little kid I missed out on basics of the story, like the fact that Mr. Smith wasn't really ment to be with the family on the ship, but just a wastrel who has failed on his mission sabotaging the family's mission. However, in some strange way Dr. Smith is actually the one character that I remember the most from the television series. My image of him is the poor fellow who always managed to get fooled by some alien lifeforms/beings in the woods on some foreign planet that the ship was currently stranded on; falling in the temptation of drinking some wicked mixture, which then made his mind go coo-coo. Well, here's the real Dr. Smith, a self-interested good-for-nothing.

Anyhow..
This story is about the Robinson family. The Earth's ozon layer is down on 40%, which implies that in only two decades no human being will be able to live there. So, it's time for some space colonizing. The Robinson family includes the father family John, who is also a very famous professor in space science (therefore his family is chosen for this pioneer mission). His wife, two daughters, and one son, is also comprised in his family. Also, a war pilot (Matt LeBlanc) is chosen to go with them, in case they should encounter hostile lifeforms.

So, the target planet is set. Now it's only ten years(!) of cryosleep till they get there. Then, wake up on a new [uninhabited] planet, and just start fresh. It should also be mentioned that the "pioneer purpose" is found by some mark that needs to be placed on the target planet, thus making it much faster for forthcoming travellers to get there. Setting the cordinates, or something like that.

However, this isn't so important. The film is fairly enjoyable. I must say I also liked the end, even though some people may find it.. well.. meaningless? ;)

Watch this one, especially if you have memories from the old television series.
