Movie: "Miller's Crossing" (1990)

Brilliant!

Another film I just can't figure out how I could have missed out in these years, written and directed by the Coen brothers. However, I must say I had that feeling of recognition somewhere out at Miller's Cross. In particular that scene between Tom and Bernie out there felt familiar. However, I didn't either reckon nor recall anything more of the story, so it was amazing.

So, what's this all about? It's a true gangster story, that's what it is. The Irish affiliations back in the 20's. The film radiates genuineness all the way through, with Thompson machine guns and everything. Lots of fun. The Wiki article on the movie tells how certain reviewers has refered to the film as noir.

Me myself isn't too familiar with the whole noir genre, so I just can't add such tribute from the bottom of my heart. However, the film is in every aspect glacious. The photography is amazing. Take a close look at it while watching the movie, and you'll see it's just hilarious. Also a few remarkable quotes to be added.

"I'll track down all of you whores."

So? What's the tale? Well, it's a story of several(!) double-crossing cases. At first it may seem like a big mess, but things will clear out pretty soon. Tom Reagan (Gabriel Byrne) is sidekick of local boss Leo (Albert Finney). Pretty early in the story there will be a case of distrust coming from Tom. Not directly, but he thinks that Leo is making a terrible decision, so he's thinking about changing side. So, what's on the other side? Johnny Caspar (Jon Polito), who works hard to gain control over the city district. The local police authorities are of course bound by restrain under all these fellows, so the whole set of domination could easily appear as Armageddon. A couple of rattle-throats, Bernie (John Turturro) and Mink (Steve Buscemi), is filling their part of being tools to mislead information, something that [in this game of honour] easily cause bullets to fly under the edge. Also, a wonder woman is involved, Verna (Marcia Gay Harden) is sister of Bernie, and also Leo's mistress. Funny how things work out, isn't it?!

High grade gangster film!
8/10
