Movie: "Imaginary Heroes" (2004)

One of the better family/relationship dramas I've seen in quite a while now. The set of families reminded me about the ones in 'The Ice Storm'. Anyways, it's about the Travis family, containing the father Ben (Jeff Daniels), the mother Sandy (Sigourney Weaver), and their children Matt, Tim and Penny.

Matt is (and have apparently always been) given preferential treatment. He's the promising swimming talent, his father's big hope on family pride. What his father don't know, is that Matt actually hates swimming, the attraction, everything. One day he's simply not there when the family gather for breakfast. He's left this world.

From this moment (really in the beginning) you get to follow the family through the bumpy road that follows on a suicide within the family. Rumors been spread, intrigues over ancient matters, the momentary escape from reality, and more.

After that Matt is out the of the picture, Ben doesn't really know how to take charge over situation. In fact, he doesn't seem sure about anything. For example, he won't allow one less tray over dinner. All seats shall be served. Freaky, huh? Even Matt's [alive] siblings seems to think so.

Another sad part is that when Ben gets furious of depression, he won't hold back his inner thoughts about who he considered the family hope. I mean, like Tim doesn't havn't got a hard time enough? Since Penny is half-way through of leaving the nest, she's not to be seen much. The film is centered on Tim (Emile Hirsh), and the way he has to put up with a real heavy burden. Great acting on his part, I must say.

The film is really well-made all the way. You just sit there all quiet and absorb the motion pictures, swollowed by the emptiness in this family's life. It's a sad, well-made story that everyone should watch.

I give this one..
7/10
