Movie: "Manic" (2001)

Beyond expectations, really. This film was really knocking me in the right place. It's about Lyle (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a kid with this aggressive part that he has having great difficulties controlling. So, the film begins when he has just bashed another kid's head in(!) with a baseball bat. When he's sitting at the principle's office, he suddenly recieves the news that this time he's not getting away. He's to go from here, to the Northwood Mental Institution, for a validation. "This transport can go more or less smooth, it's up to you", sort of. It's pretty cool, 'cuz the whole movie is filmed in this documentary footage style, if you know what I mean. It occasionally sort of feels like one whole Bumfights episode. Anyways.

He ends up at this institution, meeting lots of other kids with different sorts of disorders. Girls hurting themselves with razor blades, sexually abused boys, etc. The whole shaboom kaboodle, so to speak. The story is sort of a telling from within the institutional walls. Lyle has firmly decided that he's on his way out. He's leaving the States for Europe/Amsterdam ("Freedom land"), where all his problems will just disapear. So, well, I found this film great. Watch it, if you havn't already.

7/10
