Historical war movies - an epic withdraw..

Havn't seen much war movies in my days. So, to wrap it up I thought I'd watch somewhat of the cream of the genre. Not really sure if this is what I did, or if I just slammed through the usual mainstream crap of the genre. Nah, strike that. These are known masterpieces, and they earn respect even though I'm not really a fan of war dramas.

Gladiator (2000)

Started with this one. Marcus Aurelius is the king, and his throne shall be enherited by ..someone.. Of course, his deceitful son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) thinks that it's going to be him, mostly because the fact that he's the only son. What he hadn't expected is that Marcus Aurelius last words is that that the throne shall be inherited by the brave leader of the royal army - Maximus (Russel Crowe). Commodus gets really upset and actually gives his father a conclusive death blow. Hey, I ain't spoiling shit, everyone (except me, hehe) has seen this film already. Anyways. Commodus forces the throne and sentences Maximus to be executed in the woods. What he doesn't except is that Maximus has more lives than a cat. Anyhow, this movie wasn't really great.

Braveheart (1995)

Directed by Mel Gibson, wow. I know he's made a real box office success with Apocalypto so this may be where he started into this. This is about Scotland. It's in the 13:th century, and the heathens and the nobility and the church havn't reach any firm boundries just yet. The only thing that the reign knows how to decide, is a new law that gives all noblemen the right to subdue virgins before they are lawfully wed with their respectively farmers. Mel Gibson isn't too happy with this, especially since them savages has wraped and slaughtered the woman who he has loved ever since they were kids. Now he's out for personal revenge. Also, he will give freedom to all of Scotland. Whoa. This film actually had its moments, but it wasn't all that..

Troy (2004)

The final film. Hadn't seen it, yet I've read the Greek and Roman mythology (at least a couple of times) so I recalled the characters names and suchlike, nevertheleast the Akilles heel scene in the movie. I guess the best part with this movie was when I recognized lots of the things that were going on. However, I'm still no fan of epic war dramas. I guess this was just something that had to be done, sooner or later. Of course, with Brad Pitt as the brave warrior Akilles, it was definitely worth watching.
