Movie: "Homegrown" (1998)

Heh. I've been looking for this one for years. Now I finally had the opportunity of watching it. It was.. okey! Definitely okey. Dunno if it's to be considered a comedy or a thriller. The excitement concerning "the spooky part" is a bit too high to just draw a straight line and throw this in the pile of ordinary pothead comedies. It was actually really enjoyable.

Jack (Billy Bob Thornton), Carter and the youthful Harlan (Ryan Phillippe) is growing marijuana on the outdoor fields. I didn't catch the location, but it seems to be some Californian village. Anyways, the whole community seems to be more or less into the thing with growing dope. So, the trio makes a fair profit on their little business, and their so called manager Malcolm is keeping the authorities down with settled bribes. So, everything is ok up in at chillout county. Until, all of a sudden Malcolm gets wacked by someone(?!). What to do? First the trio is certain that the authorities is involved in Malcolm's death. But then, why is the plant fields still untouched several days later? Strange.

Maybe, just maybe, the three of them could keep on with business as usual, like as nothing ever happened. So, Jack is harvesting weed on one half of his time, whereas he's paying off the sheriff, hiring cheap harvesting labour, etc (under the name of Malcolm) on the other. How long will this last before shit hits the fan? And who Did murder Malcolm?

It's a wicked story with the romantic spice needed to hold it up for approx. one and a half hour. This movie works for a lazy Sunday.
